Here you will find an overview of the paintings since 2006. In Jos Verwiel’s canvases, a monumental image is built up in many transparent layers. In a frontal mathematical figure you recognize elements of architecture and furniture. Traces of contemporary glossy images and text from advertising can be recognized in the underlayers, which are covered with intensely painted areas of colour as well as hyper-realistic and detailed details. Like an archaeologist, Verwiel digs into the many layers of paint. His long stay in Turkey and Greece provided him with an exotic vocabulary. There is always an exciting contrast between mental/conceived and emotional/sentimental interventions. These paintings can be found in many renowned galleries and art dealers, and have since become sought-after collectibles from businesses, to the government and private individuals. Verwiel’s work has also been purchased by museums and the national collection.
PAINTING IS EASY WHEN YOU DON’T KNOW HOW, BUT VERYDIFFICULT WHEN YOU DO
