ART SHOULD DISTURB THE COMFORTABLE & COMFORT THE DISTURBED

Cesar A. Cruz

Jos Verwiel (Vught,1954) shows on this website his latest works from his studio in Breda Holland. Lately he moved his studio from Greece back to the lively Art scéne in The Netherlands. His subjects are simple, mathematical architectonical shapes give space for expressive colourfields. Verwiel`s technique however, is a complex one. Collage techniques result in multilayered structures in which he, like an archaeologist, buries and assimilates forms in his paint, as vestiges of present-day civilization. The contrast between the monumental composition and the amorphous detailed effects in glazy bright colours, gives this work a unique character. In these modern icons Verwiel does not accept the restrictions of the flat plane. He loves showing the illusion of space with physical volumes in a peculiar perspective, compressed or stretched on the large canvas. Jos Verwiel was educated in the Netherlands at the “Academy for Art Education” in Tilburg and the “Royal Academy for Art and Design” in s`Hertogenbosch; he made study tours in Great Britain, Canada, USA, Mexico, Honduras, Spain, Marocco and India; was awarded project subsidies for a number of projects; worked as a teacher of art at several Dutch universities; had exhibitions and took part in art manifestations in many museums and art galleries in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, England and Greece. His work has been commissioned and purchased by several public institutions, museums, companies and private persons. Publications on his work have appeared in art columns of various magazines, papers and books.
